Independence Day: Worth the Resurgence?

After waiting 20 years for the sequel, it had finally arrived and proved to be as visually impressive was expected, but Emmerich, some things are just better left as they were. I could say that the sequel to the 1996 Independence Day film ruined the memory of its predecessor as for a mid-nineties blockbuster it was enjoyed and celebrated by most of its audience. To this day I don’t doubt that the blockbuster is watched by many all over the states. I personally have never been a huge fan myself but it is hard to doubt the substantial success of the first Independence Day movie.

That aside and well left in the 1990’s, despite the convincing use of ‘alien’ technology and all things CGI, the reawakening of the film 20 years later was rather disappointing. Emmerich and his team waited 20 years too long for the release of this demanded sequel and by the time it had finally reached the big screens the hype over the idea of the apolocalyptic alien invasion movie had practically fizzled out. For me, the excitement of the ‘Independence Day’ sequel spread no further than seeing the faces of both Liam Hemsworth and Jessie T. Usher gracing various posters and screens, nevertheless, I did watch it, primarily for the novelty.

How can we forget the highly noticeable absence of Will Smith, the lead of the previous film and famously its biggest character. The rumoured vacancy of the star reigned true and Will failed to reach our screens battling the extra-terrestrial enemy 20 years later on and for many reasons this set the film at a miss before it even began. His replacement for lead role was Liam Hemsworth, and immediately as an audience it was disconcerting watching him when he wasn’t stood in District 12 or pining over Katniss Everdeen… It also became apparent that Liam Hemsworth struggled as the leading man and even with the support of co-star Jessie. T Usher, he failed to carry the film. With the sequel being set and released 20 years later and featuring the descendant of Will Smiths character, Steve Hiller, you’d expect the character development and plot to be, well, existent. However despite all expectations the lack of the above was astonishing. Instead we were met with the painful experience of watching a both uninterested and uninteresting new cast lead the film.

The lack of success for Independence Day: Resurgence is concurred  by its failure to even meet this abysmal prediction of $50 million for the weekend. Trailing $10 million lower than this, resulting in the film claiming an estimated $41.6 million in the opening weekend.

Despite all this it was nice to see Jeff Goldblum’s face, it had been so long since I last watched Jurassic Park… Every cloud.
